In 2017 the blonde Dutch rider continued where he had left off in 2016. The lessons he had learned as a young pro rider were put into practice and as a result he triumphed. The 24-year-old Dutchman seized the third stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. In addition, he also won the mountain classification.
His last race of 2017 was the Japan Cup Cycle Road Race. A new course where Bouwman rode to a modest 26th place, but he did not return home empty-handed. A fanclub was set up for him. “I only found out about this later. I think it has to do with my blond curls. The fans there find them very interesting.”
Last season Bouwman extended his contract with Team LottoNL-Jumbo. In his own words: ‘a logical choice’. “Through the way of coaching the team brought me to a higher level. The approach suits me very well and I would like to continue in this way in 2018. I hope that I can extend the upward trend. With this in mind, we didn’t have to negotiate for a long time to come to a satisfactory new agreement.” Bouwman specifically targets the Giro d’Italia, where he aims for a stage victory.
